Following the Amber Road

An ancient trade route from the Baltic to the Mediterranean — and how to travel it slowly today.

For three thousand years, amber moved south from the Baltic shores. Romans wore it. Egyptian queens were buried with it. The amber trade made Gdańsk rich and kept Malbork standing. Today, the road still exists. We walk it slowly — Słowiński dunes at sunrise, oyster lunch in Sopot, Malbork at golden hour, then south through the Polish lakes.
