Białowieża is older than Poland itself. Older than the idea of Europe. Walk it at dawn with a biologist and you understand what Europe looked like before agriculture — a high, dim, mushroomed cathedral of trees.
And somewhere in it — perhaps a hundred yards away, perhaps half a mile — Europe's largest land animal is breathing.
