Where the bison still walk

Inside Białowieża, the primeval forest that has never been cut by human hand.

Białowieża is older than Poland itself. Older than the idea of Europe. Walk it at dawn with a biologist and you understand what Europe looked like before agriculture — a high, dim, mushroomed cathedral of trees. And somewhere in it — perhaps a hundred yards away, perhaps half a mile — Europe's largest land animal is breathing.
